Beginnings, middles and ends

Hanging basket by Anne Williams

All stories, even ones in gardens, have beginnings, middles and ends, as Anne is finding out...
Green tomatoes ripening on the vine by Anne Williams

Tomatoes by Anne Williams

I have tomatoes! Not to pick yet, they are still a few weeks away but they are definitely on their way. This is one of my favourite times of the year in the garden, when things are starting to develop and I know that I will be enjoying fresh veg soon. The lettuce is doing well and now I should be able to get some fresh seed, I will be sowing more. However, my beans and spinach aren’t doing quite so well - you win some and you lose some.

I planted some hanging baskets a few weeks ago using Dalefoot compost – it’s peat-free and made from wool and bracken. They are (pardon the pun) blooming! The compost means that you don’t have to feed in the first year and your watering is half what it would be with other composts. It’s the first year I've tried it and it seems to be working for me.

Foxgloves that have finished flowering by Anne Williams

Foxgloves by Anne Williams

The foxgloves have finally finished flowering – I have loved watching the bees on them. I am hoping that the feverfew that is now in flower will tempt them to stay around but there certainly aren’t as many bees in the garden at the moment. I have decided to try and save the seed from some of the more unusual colour variations this year. This is a first for me, so we’ll see how it goes. I will also be sharing the seed with friends; it’s a great way to increase what you have in your garden at no cost. I just hope it works!

Anne loves gardening and wildlife so aims to combine the two wherever she can. Her garden is a fairly typical of most houses with a patio close to the house and room for growing plants beyond that.
