Seedlings by Anne Williams

Seedlings and scarce ladybirds - it's all happening in Anne's garden...

I have seedlings! The cosmos were the first to sprout, swiftly followed by Calendula, sweet peas and climbing nasturtiums.  Hurrah, the wildlife and I will have flowers this summer. I re-discovered I had a small electric propagator in the shed, so I now have lettuce seedlings in that.

My windowsills don’t get much sun during the day so when it’s sunny I am putting them outside to get some rays and then bring them back indoors, so they don’t chill and stunt growth.

As well as keeping a watching eye on my seeds, I have been doing some weeding. This isn’t one of my favourite tasks but in addition to an awful lot of foxgloves, I also have lots of creeping buttercup. What a successful plant it is! But it’s smothering my thyme and Heucheras so some of it has to go. I will leave some of it, I love its cheery flowers. How many of us remember finding out if we like butter by holding a buttercup under our chins?

While I was moving my pots outside, this tiny chap (or chapess) caught a lift. It’s a very small ladybird with a very big name Nephus quadrimaculatus or four-spotted ladybird. There aren’t many records for the county so I was chuffed to bits. One of the reasons it’s in my garden is my living wall of ivy, its host plant. The wall is actually two fence panels completely covered in ivy. It is a food source and home for many insects including holly blues, bees galore and the thrushes that love the berries in the winter. A good one to have!

How are you getting on with identifying the wildlife you are seeing from your window or in your garden? There is lots of ID here so why not become an expert in what you see? Good luck!

Anne loves gardening and wildlife so aims to combine the two wherever she can. Her garden is a fairly typical of most houses with a patio close to the house and room for growing plants beyond that.
