What was Nextdoor Nature?

Helping to bring nature into the places that we live is not only good for our physical and mental health but it also helps us to connect with each other. Taking action for nature doesn’t need to be grand, it might be feeding the birds or creating a mini pond from an old washing up bowl. Or it could be growing food your community in a shared wildlife-friendly garden. Walking along your street, listening to the birds, watching the bees and butterflies go from flower-to-flower, that’s what Nextdoor Nature was all about.

Nextdoor Nature ran from September 2022 until June 2024 and our officer, Yasmina Ashcroft, worked with and supported community groups across Redditch and Bromsgrove to help create space for nature and people in their neighbourhoods.

You can see the results of some of this in the following examples of great work taking place by community groups across the two boroughs.

Nextdoor Nature brought together communities to help nature flourish where they live and work. Thanks to £5 million funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Nextdoor Nature provided people with the advice and support they needed to help nature on their doorstep, leaving a lasting natural legacy to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
