Staff from Worcestershire Wildlife Trust are offering a day of activities on their heathland nature reserves between Bewdley, Stourport and Kidderminster.
On Saturday 26th October, from 10am until 3pm, local residents are encouraged to visit to the Trust’s heathland reserves to learn more about the wildlife that lives there. Activities will take place on The Devil’s Spittleful nature reserve.
Families can create their own spooky creature full of wildflower seeds to take home or make their own wizard or witch wands out of natural materials.
Grown ups are invited to join a guided walk at 11am from Blackstone car park and picnic place to take a closer look at the site’s myths and legends.
Beccy Somers, engagement officer for the Trust’s ‘Saving Worcestershire’s Heathlands’ project, comments “We’re looking forward to welcoming locals to our nature reserves and getting stuck into some Halloween activities.
“Throughout the day we’ll be offering family-friendly activities, such as a heathland horrors trail and clay crafts. Individuals can learn more about the history and legends of The Devil’s Spittleful nature reserve on a guided walk with one of our team.
“Heathlands are particularly rare, having lost close to 97% of these landscapes across Worcestershire in the past 200 years. These habitats also support all kinds of special wildlife, such as common lizards and yellowhammers. We’re so lucky to have these spaces on our doorstep and it’s important that we care for them.”
Efforts to engage local communities form part of a wider project to restore farmland at Dropping Well Farm and to connect over 300 acres of heathland habitat in the local area.
The restoration is being made possible thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Severn Waste Services and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, as well as generous donations following a public appeal.
