Purpose of Role

Our practical conservation volunteers are an essential part of the team working on nature reserves across the county. Volunteers help with practical conservation management to maintain the sites special features for now and for the future.

Type of work

Monkwood has a diverse population of butterflies and is home to small mammals such as dormice. Our work to provide and maintain suitable habitat is done through a number of tasks including coppicing to create glades and scrub clearance to open up the lower canopy and ground level flora. There are also several ponds onsite where we maintain surrounding vegetation.

Basic information

• Interest and enthusiasm for nature and wildlife conservation
• Willingness to work outside in all weathers
• Ability to work alone and as part of a team
• Basic use of hand tools; training will be given
• Willingness to be involved in a number of tasks as directed
• Suitable for everyone with a basic level of fitness

Time/days

One morning once a month.  Work parties take place on the 1st Sunday of the month 10am-3pm and/or 3rd Thursday of the month 10am-3pm.  Sep-Mar only.
