Purpose of role
To assist and lead on monthly Wildlife Watch group sessions at Lower Smite Farm, engaging children aged 5 – 12 with the outdoors, nature & wildlife.

Type of work
You will lead the Wildlife Watch group alongside at least one other leader. With ages ranging from 5 – 12 you will be facilitating activities and experiences in an outdoor setting with a primary focus on child-led and play-based learning. You will help to prepare and run simple nature based craft activities as well as encouraging outdoor play. You will help to ensure that the sessions are safe and running in accordance with the risk assessments.

Experience/skills needed

  1. Experience of working with children in a school, after-school or other learning environment.
  2. Experience of planning and delivering creative environmental education to children.
  3. Interest and enthusiasm for wildlife conservation and the aims of Worcestershire Wildlife Trust.
  4. Willingness to be outside in all weathers.
  5. A basic knowledge of UK wildlife is a bonus!
  6. Able to work flexibly and use initiative.
  7. Able to work in a team.
  8. Able to communicate in engaging and professional way to children and adults.
  9. Understanding of child safeguarding and health and safety procedures.
  10. Willingness to be involved in various tasks if the need arises during a session.

This position will require you to provide details of two referees and is subject to a DBS check.

Time/days per week
Once a month on the third Sunday of each month from roughly 09:30-12:30 (including setting up and packing away time) with a one hour preparation call in the week prior to each session. You will not be required to attend every session but we ask that you are available for eight to 12 dates per year and two annual team planning meetings at Lower Smite Farm.

As a volunteer Wildlife Watch leader you will have the support of the other Watch Group leaders & Engagement Officer and access to resources on Wildlife Watch leaders website. You will experience a range of different outdoor learning activities with the chance to learn new skills. You will receive health and safety and child safeguarding training as well as any other training needed such as first aid.

Minimum Term: For the smooth running of the club, Watch leaders would need to commit to come to eight to 12 sessions for at least one year.
