We are looking to grow (excuse the pun!) a team of volunteers who have some knowledge and experience of gardening for wildlife that they would be happy to share to help others improve their green spaces. Depending on your preferences, you might attend events or provide advice by phone or email. If you’re a wildlife-lover with green fingers and a desire to help spread the word, please get in touch!

Purpose of the role

There are lots of people across Worcestershire who want to make a difference for wildlife in the green spaces they have, whether that be front or back gardens, school gardens, outside spaces at work or shared community spaces but they often don’t know what to do. Our volunteer wildlife gardening champions will help in a number of ways by sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm about gardening for the benefit of wildlife. We are looking for a team of people so you wouldn’t be expected to do all the tasks below, you can pick what you are most comfortable with.

Type of tasks you will be involved with

Below are some examples of the roles you could play within our wildlife gardening (WG) team. You can tell us on your application form which of these you’d like to do.

  • WG champion – events: Joining us at events to give advice to the public about gardening for wildlife, this might involve doing practical gardening activities.
  • WG champion – talks: Giving talks to community groups in person or on Zoom (depending on what you are comfortable with) to share the Trust’s wildlife gardening recommendations and to answer questions.
  • WG champion – supporting the engagement team: Be someone that can help extend the engagement teams capacity to provide advice and guidance to communities and the public
  • WG champion - telephone and email support: Answer questions and provide advice to the public over the phone or by email about what they can do to improve their green space for wildlife.

All requests and enquiries for advice, talks and events will be managed by the engagement team and we will pass these out to volunteers as and when they are available to help. We will discuss your availability and preferences once we have received you application and on an ongoing basis.

Experience and skills required

You don’t need to be a wildlife or gardening expert, we can help you to learn the best advice, but some gardening know-how and experience of making your own green space more wildlife-friendly would be really useful. Of course, wildlife gardening experts are very welcome too, we need a team of people with different skills to work together. You’ll need to be friendly and approachable to help us inspire others and encourage them to take action for wildlife where they live.

If you’re an expert but you don’t fancy the public-facing side of the role, please still get in touch, there may be other ways you can help us!

Days/times we would like you to be available

This is really flexible, we can work with what suits you although if you’d like to help with events and talks they sometimes take place on weekends or out of usual office hours but it will always be your choice to take part or not.

Benefits

This is a great chance to be more involved with your local Wildlife Trust and to share your knowledge with others who are just starting out. With so much of Worcestershire being gardens and community spaces they are a really important part of helping wildlife to recover and little actions across all these spaces can make a big difference.  We know there are lots of people out there keen to do what they can, we just need the right team to help them along the way with some good advice!

We’re Wild About Inclusion

To us, this means inspiring, empowering and engaging people from all backgrounds, cultures, identities and abilities, to change the natural world for the better.  It also means cultivating inclusive workspaces that are free from discrimination, where differences are valued, everyone can be themselves and flourish, just like nature!
